Elavon Merchant Services Review

Quick details of the company
Before we dive deep into Elavon’s payment processing, let’s begin with a few quick facts about the company. Elavon, formerly NOVA, was founded 23 years ago in Atlanta, Georgia. It’s been accredited by the Better Business Bureau since 2009, and it is currently graded with the highest score possible – A+.

Elavon’s high grade occurred due to five factors that impressed the BBB—the amount of time it’s been in business, the complaint volume filed with the BBB, the response to 251 complaints, the resolution of the complaints filed, and the sufficient background available for the BBB.

Contract duration for payment processing without early termination fees is month-to-month. But typically you’ll sign a three-year agreement that auto-renews, so you’ll need to ensure that you remember the date your contract auto-renews if you want to change or forgo services with Elavon.
Short summary of the product offering
Elavon’s payment processing services offer a wide range of solutions for businesses. From mobile to in-store to online services, Elavon provides merchant services to any type of business using Fusebox or through a third party of your choice. Of course, the third party must be compatible with Elavon.

The company offers solutions for any type of business. It even offers payment processing for specific industries such as airlines, hospitality/travel/entertainment, restaurants, retail, healthcare, and public sector/education.

Elavon’s payment processing services allow businesses to use any of the main four credit cards—Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover—in addition to UnionPay cards, debit cards, e-checks, and gift/prepaid cards.

And if your business is conducted solely online, Elavon delivers its own online payment processing and API. So no matter which payment method(s) you choose for your business, Elavon has the capability to process nearly any payment.
Details of Product offering

Fees
Elavon has flat-rate plans and fees as well as terminal and mobile offers that do not have cancellation or “hidden” fees. Let’s go into a bit more detail for the flat-rate fees.

Card swiped Keyed entry Monthly fee For terminal/card reader
Terminal offer 2.65% and $0.19 3.5% and $0.19 $10 $499 (for Ingenico iCT250)
Mobile offer 2.65% and $0.19 3.5% and $0.19 $10 $24.99 (for Magtek aDynamo mobile card reader)

Both the terminal and mobile options have a higher percentage rate (discount rate) than the industry average of 1.69. However, the $0.19 per transaction fee for credit, debit, and online gateway run around the industry average per transaction.

Cancellation fee
If you end Elavon’s contract early, you will incur a cancellation fee. The fee depends on the charges you paid Elavon within the past year or the charges that remain within the contract that you terminate. Elavon states in its terms of services that if the “fees are being billed on a per transaction basis, [you] shall be obligated to pay an early termination fee equal to the average of the transaction volume over the previous six month period at the per transaction rate set forth on the enrollment forms for the remainder of the then term.” So if you end an Elavon contract, you must pay within 30 days of notifying Elavon.

Another way to encounter a termination fee is by using Elavon’s interchange-plus pricing model. A monthly minimum and early termination fee is included in this cancellation fee scenario.

Payment gateways
For payment gateways, you can either choose Elavon’s integration with Fusebox or a third party option.

Elavon’s Fusebox provides businesses and their customers security, stability, connectivity, flexibility, visibility, and simplicity. Fusebox accepts a wide variety of payment methods, including the four major credit and debit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover) as well as e-checks and gift/prepaid cards. The highly efficient and secure system makes sure customer and business data is hidden behind a firewall. It also fights off any risks with the latest PCI and PA-DSS security standards.

But if you think that Elavon’s Fusebox isn’t for you, you can use a different gateway to integrate with Elavon. Just check to see if the third party is compatible with Elavon.

Mobile capabilities
Whether you’re wanting an additional sales terminal or the ability to use mobile devices such as your phone or tablet to process transactions, Elavon offers a free app and/or a card reader to process the transaction on most Android, Apple, and BlackBerry devices. All payment data is stored in a secure location, and all receipts are sent electronically to the customer.

eCommerce platform support
Elavon not only has mobile capabilities but it also has online processing available to eCommerce merchant. Shopify, Magento, and WooCommerce all integrate well with Elavon’s MyVirutual Merchant.

Using Elavon’s own payment solution and API is best for small and medium businesses. The latest fraud mitigation tools and gateway security is protecting your business and your customer’s data. No third party is used for online processing, so all the data is stored through Elavon.

Security/privacy
Elavon offers security points at multiple parts of the payment process. And if you don’t want Elavon to do all the work for payment processing, you can have third parties assess and secure parts of the transactions. Of course, you are also able to choose connectivity options, including SSL, VPN, MPLS, and dial.

Customer Service
Elavon offers 24/7 customer service in the United States. Customer service is also available in other countries and in nine languages. Check Elavon’s website for specific details about non-U.S. customer service. And as long as you don’t use any third parties for any part of the payment process, you only need to contact Elavon for questions. However, if you sign up through a reseller or third party, you might need to contact another customer support to answer your questions.

As for Elavon’s social media channels, the company has not developed either their Facebook or Twitter channels. Google+ is nonexistent and their LinkedIn page is bare. Any customer support and commentary must go through the company’s website because Elavon’s social media channels are not active.

The bottom line

Quick summary
Elavon offers payment processing options for all the common credit cards in addition to debit cards, e-checks, and gift/prepaid cards. Elavon completes the whole payment process in-house, but you can elect to have a third party for the payment gateway. Elavon is focused on your security and uses the most up-to-date features available. Plus, if all of the transactions are processed through Elavon, then you know that all your information as well as your customer’s data is housed within Elavon.
