Wearable tech is a new, booming industry that tech journalists and fanatics are beginning to classify as a digital revolution and the latest, fastest growing trend. Not sure what ‘wearable tech’ is? This is the term given to any wearable piece of technology such as fitness bands, smartwatches, rings and clothing, or devices that have the ability to improve our personal lives such as smart toothbrushes and sleep trackers.
The trend has increased so much in popularity this year that 2014 has been deemed The Year of Wearable Tech and 1.7 million fitness bands are expected to be shipped by the end of the year. It’s also estimated that by the year 2025, wearable tech will have made a huge impact on most of the American population, allowing us to augment our reality and gather quick feedback on our daily life – from our steps and heart rate, to posture, sleep patterns and more.
With smartphones, tablets, (and now Apple Watches!) at our fingertips, we live in a world where waiting is nearly unheard of and knowledge has the power to make you faster, smarter and better. Wearable technology is expanding this need for immediacy and knowledge by giving you the opportunity to see your data as it happens – whenever you want – enabling you to improve your health and daily life. Want to be more fit and active? Wear a bracelet that tells you how many steps you get a day. Does a history of skin cancer run in your family? Wear a UV-ray tracker that tells you when to get in and out of the sun.
A recent study of smartphone users found that on average, we unlock our smartphones more than 100 times a day. And, internet analyst Mary Meeker estimates that as many as two-thirds of those 100 uses could be handled with a wearable tech device. Just as the smartphone once replaced the computer, we’re likely to see wearable tech replace smartphones. As the wearable technology trend continues to gain traction, the biggest and brightest companies are releasing their best gadgets, but which one is right for you as a business owner?
